Police are investigating the armed robbery of a pub in the Christchurch suburb of Bishopdale.
A spokesperson said a man wearing a balaclava and carrying a firearm entered the Tavern Harewood bar, which was full of people, shortly after 10.30pm.
He demanded cash and fled the scene on foot into Bishopdale Park behind the pub.
A staff member and a patron briefly chased the man, who dropped items related to the robbery including cash, while he was running through the park.
Police said they would like to hear from anyone who saw any suspicious activity in the area last night.
