Swimmers brought to shore after fraught rescue

A woman is in a critical condition after going to the aid of a swimmer who got into trouble off a Waikato beach.

Sergeant Jonathan Cheeseman said the woman, 20, was swept out to sea after going to help a 20-year-old man, who got into trouble at Sunset Beach in Port Waikato about 1.40pm.

A bystander, 43, who swam out to her and kept her head above the water until two surfers helped bring them in.

The swimmer who was originally in trouble got to shore safely, police said.
