Online motorway toll system shut down

3:05 pm on 7 January 2009

The New Zealand Transport Agency says it is putting even more security into its online prepay toll facility after concerns were raised about its system.

The agency shut down the toll system after concerns were raised about its security.

More than 900 people had used the agency's website to prepay for tolls for the Northern Gateway motorway between Orewa and Puhoi.

The New Zealand Transport Agency's northern regional director, Wayne McDonald, says the 960 people had already registered and sent their credit card or bank details over the insecure Internet link.

He says the agency has resolved any security issues for those people, and the agency is working to ensure the online system is secure in time for the motorway's opening on January 25.

Toll users can continue to use a 0800 number, which is secure.
