Paper plant fire still burning

The Fire Service in Auckland stayed overnight at the scene of a paper plant fire in Penrose.

Smoke is still rising inside the damaged building which is filled with large blackened waterlogged bales of recycled paper.

The fire began at midday on Wednesday in a single story building at the Paper Reclaim plant on Hugo Johnston Drive, not far from the Southdown meatworks which was destroyed by fire last month.

Chief fire officer Brian Edwards says the blaze is under control but bales of paper are expected to burn for the next few days.

He says it's been too dangerous to begin an investigation into how the fire started.
