An annual survey has again rated New Zealand cities as having some of the best quality of living standards in the world.

Mercer's 2010 Quality of Living Survey rated cities against 39 criteria, including political and socio-economic factors, environmental factors, health and sanitisation, education, transport and other public services.

Auckland again scored among the world's top five cities, holding steady at fourth position, on par with Vancouver. Wellington held steady in 12th position.

Vienna retains the top spot as the city with the world's best quality of living. Zurich and Geneva follow in second and third position.

Sydney was ranked 10th and Melbourne 18th.
