Telecommunications company, Vodafone, wants the government to spend billions of dollars more on an ultra-fast broadband network.
It says the network will be a national resource, but taxpayer funding for it lags behind spending on other infrastructure.
Vodafone chief executive Russell Stanners says the Government needs to lift its investment in ultra-fast broadband from $1.5 billion to $5 billion.
He says that would bring broadband spending closer to the $30 billion dollars over 10 years that is allocated to roading.
Eighteen companies are vying to help build the fibre network. The successful tenderers will be announced by October.
