Otago hopes Australian coach will end Shield drought

The Otago Rugby Union is banking on an Australian to end its Ranfurly Shield drought.

Otago has not won the Ranfurly Shield for over 50 years: 1957 was the last time the Shield was in residence at Carisbrook.

An NPC match against Southland on Saturday doubles as a Shield challenge.

Former Queensland coach Phil Mooney admits it would be somewhat ironic if an Australian helped Otago bring the Shield back to Dunedin.

However, Otago is given little chance of success after a loss to Counties-Manukau in the first round of the NPC.
