Decision due on Wanganui's name

7:13 am on 27 March 2009

A government board will decide on Friday whether Wanganui should be spelt with an "h".

Representatives from Te Runanga o Tupoho say the city's Maori name is wrong and the local iwi group has proposed that the board officially change it to include an "h" after the "w".

Wanganui's river, health board and electorate already incorporate the "h" in their names.

A city referendum three years ago found 82% of voters were against any change, and a month ago Wanganui district councillors voted the same way.

The decision by the Geographic Board is expected to be made public on Monday.
