Police in Whangarei have charged a man following a serious assault on an officer.
The officer suffered head injuries when he was struck with a rock while attending a brawl in the city last week.
He was hospitalised but is now recovering at home from temporary vision problems.
A 19-year-old man will appear in court on Thursday charged with wounding with intent to injure.
Police say they are grateful to members of the public who helped them at the scene.
