'Leaky' bus shelters anger commuters

The chairman of a community board in Auckland says many of the city's bus shelters are poorly designed and let in the rain.

About 570 bus shelters have been built and maintained at no cost to the city council by an advertising company, Adshel, in return for it placing ads in them.

The Eden Albert Community Board chairman, Christopher Dempsey, wants the council to intervene.

At a bare minimum, he says, commuters should expect the seats, walls and floor of the shelters to be dry.

The council says the structures used by Adshel are of proven international design, and it has no problem with them.
