A man facing a charge in relation to a woman found dead outside an Auckland police station will now have his charge upgraded to murder.

On 30 December, the 24-year-old man drove to the Counties Manukau police station to speak to officers, and shortly afterwards, a body was found in a vehicle outside.

Initially, he was set to face an assault-related offence charge in court, but that has now been upgraded to murder, police said in a statement today.

He is due to appear in Manukau District Court on 4 January.

Police also conducted a scene examination at an address in Mona Avenue, Māngere Bridge last week in relation to the death.

Police said they were still trying to work out the circumstances leading to the woman's death but confirmed the pair knew each other.

Formal identification is still to be completed.
