A plan is being sought to support Te Anau's growth to become a standalone journey and a central hub for Fiordland.

In 2021, the Milford Opportunities Project was unveiled, offering a vision about the role of Te Anau in the region, but Te Anau Basin Development Plan is aimed to offer more details while aligning with the existing vision.

Southland District Council and Fiordland Community Board is calling for tenders to draft a multi-faceted development plan to enhance Te Anau, Manapouri and the wider area for visitors and residents.

That includes recommendations and conceptional designs that consider accommodation, services, recreational activities, cycleways, roads, Te Anau Airport and costings.

Work on the project began more than three years ago when the Fiordland Community Board sought to develop a Destination Management Plan for Te Anau and the wider area.

Southland District councillor Sarah Greaney said it was a positive step forward for the area.
