A new local feature film is aiming to capture the years-long fight for justice for the 29 men killed in the Pike River mine explosion in 2010.
The Pike River families have successfully pushed for re-entry to the mine to recover evidence and the remains of their loved ones with hopes of closure and accountability.
Production has started in Māwhera Greymouth with the director behind Scarfies, Rob Sarkies, at the helm.
It had been a huge privilege to work with members of the Pike River families over the past five years as they prepared to share their story and the impact it had on their lives, Sarkies said.
"We need films like this in the world to show what is possible when individuals take a stand against injustice.
"Ordinary people fighting against power, doing it in their own way, and having an impact."
The film was written by Fiona Samuel and follows the aftermath of the explosion.
Casting has yet to be announced.
The film will be made in association with the New Zealand Film Commission, NZ On Air, Three, the New Zealand Screen Production Grant and Park Road Post Production.
