Police are investigating a hit and run fatality after the body of a man was found by the side of the road north of Auckland overnight.
Police were called about 12.30am Friday after a member of the public found the person unresponsive on O'Brien Road at Lucas Heights on the North Shore.
Detective Senior Sergeant Dave Nimmo said it appears the driver of the vehicle involved did not stop and left immediately.
The man died at the scene.
Police are are asking for the public's assistance to identify and locate the driver and vehicle involved.
They want anyone who was in the area or has any CCTV or dashcam footage to contact them.
Nimmo said the driver may have panicked, and urges them to contact police.
The vehicle also may have suffered noticeable damage.
Anyone with information, or who has footage from between 11pm to 12.30am in the area overnight, is asked contact police via 105 or update the file online, referencing the case number 231208/4800.
