Police are back at the scene where human remains were found in Porirua, as they continue to work to identify the dead person.

The remains were discovered near the Whitireia Park walkway in Tītahi Bay on 31 January.

A post-mortem was completed last week, but on Monday police told RNZ they were yet to identify the remains.

Earlier this month Detective Senior Sergeant Hamish Blackburn said identification would take some time.

But Blackburn said it was a priority to identify who the remains belong to, and how they came to be where they were found.

On Monday a police spokesperson told RNZ those enquires were ongoing.

"Police will be back at the scene this week to complete the scene examination."

Whitireia Park and its tracks remain open to the public.
