Antenatal programme for Maori women on West Coast

8:59 am on 2 July 2009

West Coast women are starting an antenatal programme for Maori women.

Matauranga Haputanga project coordinator Ruth Chisholm says more than 10% of babies born on the coast are Maori, but only about 1% of the women who attend antenatal classes are Maori.

She told Waatea News it's a chance to provide women with a kaupapa Maori experience during pregnancy and at birth.

The sessions could be coordinated around meetings with midwives.
