Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) said it responded to reports of a fire in an abandoned three-storey building on Tasman Street in the suburb of Mount Cook just before midnight on Saturday night.

The fire, which was extinguished overnight, was on the ground floor of an empty apartment building on Tasman St, which is set to be redeveloped.

Police say although no one was in the apartment where the smoke originated, people in neighbouring buildings or areas were evacuated.

Nine vehicles responded, including five fire appliances, two ladder trucks and a breathing apparatus unit to put out the blaze.

FENZ said the fire was extinguished by 2am and the structure was still standing.

A fire investigator has attended the scene this morning - but the cause of the fire is yet to be determined.
