A woman has been charged with assaulting a two-year-old girl, who has died in Starship Hospital in Auckland.
Police have launched a homicide inquiry and have been carrying out a detailed scene examination of the child's home in Kaitaia.
The child was first taken to Kaitaia Hospital with serious injuries at 4.30am on Saturday, before being transported to Auckland.
Detectives say family members they've spoken to, have been co-operative.
However, a significant number of friends and family are still to be spoken to.
Police say family members are being offered counselling from Victim Support.
A woman, 32, will appear in the Auckland District Court charged with assault on Monday.
Detective Senior Sergeant Dean Begbie won't say if further charges are likely.
A post mortem on the girl will also be held then.
