A plan to relocate Hawke's Bay District Health Board's alcohol and drug addiction treatment centre has gained council approval, despite overwhelming opposition from residents.

The board wants to move from its existing facility in Napier because it is old and no longer meets the needs of residential patients or staff.

Only one of the 103 submissions received by Hastings District Council council was in favour of the centre being moved to a former rest home near Cornwall Park in Hastings.

Residents are concerned about the negative effects the centre will have on the character and values of their properties.

They are also worried about the security of the facility, and their personal safety.
