Residents against plans for expressway

Residents of a subdivision on Kapiti Coast north of Wellington fear up to 400 houses could be bulldozed because of Government plans for a four lane expressway.

Transport Minister Steven Joyce has announced the highway will be built through residential areas in Paraparaumu and Waikanae.

The Transport Agency is now consulting the community on two possible routes.

Some residents at Waterstone Subdivision at Paraparaumu say both options involve bulldozing hundreds of homes.

The agency says details about the expressway's design and impact on properties is not yet available. It estimates between 200 - 400 properties may be affected.

It says these are rough figures and will be subject to change as a result of consultation and because some of the affected properties are undeveloped areas or road reserve.
