Debate over waterfront buildings at Lyall Bay

9:16 am on 23 October 2009

Suggestions on the future look of the Lyall Bay - the only surf beach in Wellington - have been debated at a public meeting.

A report on the four waterfront buildings was commissioned after a fire in August damaged the Maranui Surf Life Saving Club and a popular cafe located there.

The life saving club building is owned by Wellington City Council, which says rebuilding could cost $750,000.

Many at the meeting felt the council should re-build the club building and leave debate on the future of the three other buildings for another day.

But some others felt the meeting was overshadowed by peoples' desire to see the cafe rebuilt.
