Fire fighters are continuing to monitor the site of a destructive blaze south west of Nelson.

The blaze began on Thursday afternoon at Tadmore Saddle near Glenhope and has raged through about 500 hectares of rural plantation forestry, scrub and Department of Conservation land.

The fire destroyed one farmhouse, severely damaged another and also hit several farm buildings and equipment.

By Saturday the fire was contained and under control, helped by rain that is likely to persist for the next few days.

The Waimea Rural Fire Authority says fire fighters will remain at the site over the next few days to dampen down any hot spots and put in fire breaks.

At its height, 80 people were battling the flames and 10 helicopters emptied hundreds of monsoon buckets of water over the area.

He says an investigation into the cause of the fire is continuing.
