Police in Christchurch are still hoping for information that will lead them to the man who mugged an elderly woman in the city last week.

The 86-year-old was attacked after buying milk at the Barrington Mall on Thursday night. She was thrown to the ground by her attacker and suffered a fractured pelvis.

Detective Sergeant Ross Tarawhiti says police have yet to identify the attacker. He is described as Maori, of slim build and aged between 20 and 30.

The man had shoulder-length curly hair and was seen running off in the direction of Sugden Street.

The woman's handbag has not been recovered and police say residents should check their gardens and rubbish bins.
