Runaway fire truck narrowly misses house

7:17 am on 13 December 2009

An inquiry is under way to determine how a fire truck rolled about 200 metres from the station it was parked at before stopping just short of a house.

The truck had been parked at the Silverdale Fire Station, near Orewa, about 6.15pm on Friday, but was spotted moving of its own accord about 45 minutes later.

It rolled down a driveway, across Hibiscus Coast Road, through a fence, over a retaining wall before stopping 10 metres from a house.

Silverdale Fire Service fleet manager Ross Taylor says he has no idea how the truck managed to leave the station's engine bay and it is lucky it didn't hit any traffic or pedestrians.

Mr Taylor says the vehicle is now at a workshop in Auckland and will be examined on Tuesday.
