Home found by marae society

The Kororareka Marae Society finally has a home in Russell.

Waatea News reports it's leased a former Department of Conservation visitor's centre at the south end of the town's historic precinct, near the museum and Pompallier House.

Chairman Colwyn Shortland says while the building is not suited to traditional marae use, it can be used for meetings, and serve as a satellite venue for other marae in the Bay of Islands.

He says the marae society still owns a block on the edge of town and eventually wants to build a marae there.
