Police in Whakatane say a three-year-old girl has been run over by a motorbike after she started it up on her own.
They say the girl was sitting on the bike in the suburb of Awakeri at about 4.30pm on Sunday when she managed to start the motor.
They say she then fell from the bike and was run over.
She has been taken to Whakatane Hospital with a fractured hip but her injuries are not life threatening.
