Morning Report: local papers

7:37 am on 27 January 2010

Wednesday's headlines: Growing desire for changes to dog laws; Air NZ's new beds described as 'cuddle class'; cleansing ceremony for Nandor Tanczos involved cutting his dreadlocks after he left Parliament; mystery of flight by small plane over Dunedin in the middle of the night.

NZ Herald

The New Zealand Herald pictures Air New Zealand's new beds with the headline 'Welcome to cuddle class'.

The paper also says blanket secrecy over SAS operations has been lifted. It gives details of what the troops are doing in Afghanistan, saying the Defence Force has revealed they recently helped capture bomb-makers in Kabul.

The Herald also reports Corporal Willie Apiata has been told to be more careful about obscuring his identity.

Dominion Post

The Dominion Post has a large photo of ex-Green MP Nandor Tanczos without his dreadlocks. The former politician says he cut them off as part of a cleansing ceremony after he left Parliament.

The paper has also spoken with the surgeon who operated on a child who nearly lost an eye in a pit bull attack. He's pictured sitting with his own dog, Maximus, beside an article on a growing desire for changes to New Zealand dog laws.

And there is a report on a bus driver failing a breath test in Hawke's Bay.

The Press

The Press is looking at renewed debate between Christchurch's drivers and cyclists. This follows a businessman writing on an online forum that he would target cyclists in his Hummer.

The paper also says 1200 elderly residents have had their home help cut under a new scheme by Canterbury DHB.

ODT

The Otago Daily Times has a photo of an 11 year old boy holding the reins of a 30 year old horse, Sarah Dane. The horse was loaned by Ray and Rei Owens for the Taieri District Pony Club on Tuesday.

The ODT also reports some Dunedin hospital patients have already paid for cancer drugs not funded by the government, with the consent of senior management.

And the mystery of why a small plane took a flight over Dunedin city in the middle of the night, is explained.
