Winds mar Anniversary Day regatta

3:49 pm on 1 February 2010

Strong winds are hampering the 170th Auckland Anniversary Day regatta on Waitemata harbour, with one race being cancelled.

The race features about 500 boats including vintage tugs, classic yachts and simple dinghies.

Regatta chairman Eric Mahoney says easterly winds of 20 to 30 knots mean sailors are working very hard to control their craft.

He says the Mahurangi to Auckland race had to be cancelled.

Other races are scheduled to start on time and expected to finish in the inner harbour about 3pm.

Two Royal New Zealand Navy vessels, HMNZS Mana and Taupo, are marking the start and finishing lines.
