Two pulled from sea after boat catches fire

Two people were rescued from a burning boat near Mayor Island in the Bay of Plenty on Monday.

They had made a mayday call when fire broke out in the engine area of their chartered fishing-boat. They had just enough time to make a mayday call before jumping into the sea.

The police say the pair were taken aboard by another recreational fishing boat that was nearby and brought back to Whangamata uninjured.

The Waihi coastguard is deciding what to do with the damaged boat and assessing whether it poses a hazard.

Sergeant Dave Litton of the Waihi police says it's fortunate another boat was just 20 minutes away. He says the 8m fibreglass boat had about 200 litres of diesel on board and was quickly engulfed in flames.
