Telecom workers picket over redundancies

Workers at Telecom's 111 call centre in Palmerston North have been picketing outside their offices to protest against being laid off without redundancy compensation.

In February, Telecom announced it was moving its Manawatu-based 111 call centre, which was contracted to outsourcing company Sitel, back to Wellington to consolidate its call centre resources.

A Telecom spokesperson says all 30 Palmerston North-based workers have been offered jobs at the Wellington call centre, which will be operating by July.

But the Engineering, Printing and Manufacturing Union says Telecom has not offered compensation for those workers who do not want to take up jobs in Wellington.
