Roof company fined for careless removal of asbestos

A Dunedin roofing company has been fined $30,000 for not properly protecting its workers and a client from asbestos dust during water-blasting of an asbestos roof.

Sealtec Otago Limited was hired in May 2009 to clean and seal the asbestos roof at an engineering company, which later found asbestos residue on floors, machinery and cars.

Sealtec admitted two charges under health and safety legislation.

The Department of Labour says neither Sealtec nor the contractor knew how to deal with asbestos, nor the dangers of water-blasting it.
