Earthquake swarm around Whakatane

A swarm of earthquakes has occurred in the Bay of Plenty region.

Eight quakes of magnitude 3.0 or higher were felt in and around Whakatane on Thursday morning. Other smaller earthquakes have also been detected.

The first, and biggest, quake was 20km north of Whakatane at 2.38am. It had a magnitude of 4.3.

There was a 3.2 magnitude quake in the same place 10 minutes later and a 4.0 quake at 3.42am just 10 km north of Whakatane.

Another two quakes, at 4.21am and 5.03am, both had magnitudes of 3.7.

A sixth quake at 6.18am was magnitude 3.5 while the seventh quake, at 7.31am was of magnitude 3.1.

At 9.54am a quake was recorded with a magnitude of 3.3.

GNS Science says it recorded a total of 25 quakes in the area on Thursday morning - none strong enough to cause damage.
