Police in Auckland are warning retailers not to take the law into their own hands, after a robber armed with a knife was chased out of an Orewa dairy by a staff member wielding a much bigger one.
They say the incident occurred just before 6pm on Thursday, when the offender entered a dairy on the Hibiscus Coast Highway.
Police spokesperson Kevin Loughlin says the man presented a large kitchen knife and demanded the two shop operators to get down on the floor.
However, he says one of them grabbed a bigger knife and chased after him.
The offender ran down an alleyway, where it is believed he was picked up by a waiting vehicle.
He is described as Pakeha, between 15 to 20 years old and wearing a grey and black checked top.
