Mayor of earthquake city in Wellington

The mayor of a Chinese city, Tianjin, which was at the centre of one of the deadliest earthquakes in history, is in Wellington on Friday to discuss earthquake preparedness.

The city of 12 million people, was hit by a magnitude 7.8 earthquake in 1976, killing between 240,000 - 780,000 people.

Mayor Huang Xingguo will hold talks on earthquake technology, and inspect strengthening work which is underway at the Embassy Theatre.

Earlier this month, Wellington Mayor Kerry Prendergast visited Tianjin while on a trip to China with 70 business people from the capital.
