Police find nothing criminal in Google data-gathering

Police say there is no evidence to suggest that the internet giant Google did anything criminal when it collected information from wireless home networks.

The investigation is being referred back to the Privacy Commissioner, who asked the Police Cyber Crime Unit in May to investigate the matter.

Google had acknowledged collecting data from home computers while it recorded images two years ago from vehicles for its street-view online mapping service.

It said it collected wireless data in more than 30 countries, including New Zealand.

Police say there's nothing to suggest a criminal offence, but they add that the case is a timely reminder for people to consider their online security.

Privacy watchdogs in Australia, Britain and Germany have also expressed concern about Google's data collection.
