Future of child cancer service to be revealed

10:04 pm on 20 September 2010

Parents of child cancer patients in Wellington are to be told at a closed-door meeting on Tuesday how the embattled services will be run in the future.

Some patients have been forced to travel to Auckland or Christchurch for treatment, amid uncertainty about the viability of child cancer services in Wellington.

Now, Capital and Coast District Health Board says it has got an agreement with other DHBs over the future of the service, but won't say what this is until it's told parents at a meeting at Wellington Hospital on Tuesday night.

Radio New Zealand's health correspondent understands a shared service with Canterbury DHB is most likely.

Other options have included upgrading the Wellington service or referring patients to Auckland and Canterbury.

John Thomson, whose six-year-old son Riley's is being treated for leukaemia, believes infighting among DHBs is what's made the issue so hard to resolve.

The DHB and the Health Ministry have so far declined to comment.
