The Electricity Commission has approved a $62 million upgrade of electricity transmission systems in the South Island.

The project will upgrade the links between the hydro dams on the Clutha River and Invercargill, and improve links to Gore and the surrounding Southland region.

The plan is one of a long list of capital projects including an improved Cook Strait cable and new lines around Manawatu and into Auckland and Northland, collectively worth billions of dollars.
