Electric cars being launched in Wellington

Wellington City Council is to begin a trial to gauge the viability of electric cars in the city.

Five Mitsubishi, four-seater, battery powered cars will be unveiled at a special launch in Civic Square at midday on Thursday.

Wellington is the first city in New Zealand to trial the vehicles, which will be used by companies including Meridian Energy and New Zealand Post.

Mayor Kerry Prendergast says it is hoped that eight of these vehicles will be on the streets of the capital by the end of the year.

The vehicles produce no greenhouse gas emissions.
