Wellington is tipped for a bumper cruise ship season, with the number of passengers visiting the city expected to jump by 30%, pumping an extra $3 million into the economy.

A record 58 cruise ships carrying about 95,000 passengers are scheduled to dock in Wellington over the next six months, spending about $13.3 million.

The chief executive of Positively Wellington Tourism, David Perks, says 10 more ships will visit Wellington this season, which starts at the weekend.

Mr Perks says the size of cruise vessels has been gradually increasing over the years.

Cruise ship passengers each spend an average of $140 a day when in port.
