Mayor wants gangs kicked out of Wairoa

9:40 am on 1 November 2010

Wairoa Mayor Les Probert is promising to crack down on gangs and wants them kicked out of town.

A man, 48, was shot as he filled his car with petrol at 6.30pm on Friday.

It was the second gang related shooting in the northern Hawke's Bay town in a week and the fourth since June.

Mr Probert says Wairoa is a great place to live and to visit, and he's thoroughly sick of shootings giving the town a bad name.

He wants an urgent meeting with the police and Chris Tremain MP to discuss what can be done, including banning gang patches in town.

Police in Wairoa says the gang confrontations there are inter-generational and not easily solved.

Police are still searching for a black Honda Civic involved in the shooting and are reviewing security camera footage.
