Phenomenal response to eDay, says organiser

The organiser of this year's eDay collection says the response has been phenomenal.

Held at 50 centres around the country on Saturday, eDay allows people to dispose of old computers, monitors and mobile phones for free.

National organiser, Laurence Zwimpfer says 17,787 cars, at least 1000 more than last year, dropped items off at collection points.

Initial results suggest 77,000 items were collected, weighing 877 tonnes.

Mr Zwimpfer says while that appears to be down on last year's 83,000 items, he suspects this year's figure may be understated.

He says many collection points stopped counting, after being inundated with so many people.

Mr Zwimpfer says he expects to have a more accurate picture when the 110 shipping containers are weighed next week.

The Ministry for the Environment is currently calling for expressions of interest for a recycler to process the waste.
