Armistice Day ceremony held in capital

12:05 pm on 11 November 2010

The 92nd anniversary of Armistice Day has been marked with a ceremony at the National War Memorial in Wellington.

Governor-General Sir Anand Satyanand was joined by war veterans, leaders of the Defence Force, foreign diplomats and MPs for the service.

Armistice Day on 11 November marks the anniversary of the armistice that ended hostilities on the Western Front in World War I.

The eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month marks the moment when hostilities ceased in 1918.

At 11am on Thursday, the peace bell at the top of the Carillon in the capital chimed 11 times before wreaths were laid against the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

A minute's silence was held to remember those who gave their life in the Great War.

Inside the Hall of Memories, Rear Admiral David Ledson said more than nine million lives were lost on both sides of the conflict in a war that gave New Zealanders a sense of identity.

Members of the Defence Force are standing guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier from 6am until 5pm.
