Tauranga taxi check finds three-quarters with faults

6:18 pm on 22 November 2010

An operation to check the safety of taxis in Tauranga has found 18 out of 25 cabs pulled over had faults.

One taxi was ordered off the road immediately because of severely worn front tyres.

Four drivers were told to go directly home or to a place of repair along a pre-determined route and at a set speed because of safety concerns about such things as worn tyres and suspension.

Another 13 drivers were given five days to fix less critical problems, including oil leaks, cracks in tail light covers and broken number plate lights.

Numerous omissions in log books were also discovered as police and Transport Agency officers checked for signs of driver fatigue.
