Educators work with schools after 'self-harm' texts

8:55 pm on 24 November 2010

Education officials in Auckland are working closely with other agencies after a spate of text messages encouraging young people to harm themselves.

Police in south Auckland say at least one girl, aged 12, died as a result of such messages.

The officials have been talking to six schools in the Papakura area where young people have sent and received texts giving instructions about how to self-harm.

The Ministry of Education has a traumatic incident team working with schools affected by any sudden deaths.

Its regional staff are working with police and Child, Youth & Family.
