Printing industry insists it's booming despite closures

A group that represents printing companies says the industry is still strong, despite the closure of a plant in South Auckland that has left 150 people out of work.

The APN Print plant in Manukau closed for good on Tuesday.

The Engineering, Manufacturing and Printing Union says 120 more printers will lose their jobs when PMP Print in Warkworth closes next year.

It believes there will be further redundancies with more work moving to the internet.

But PrintNZ says that while some parts of the industry might be shrinking, others, involving new technologies, are booming.

Director Joan Grace says the commercial printing industry is in good health, with about 1000 printing businesses employing about 9000 people.
