Food prices fell in November for the first time in four months due mainly to lower vegetable prices.

Statistics New Zealand says prices across the board fell 0.6%.

Vegetable prices fell 10% during the month, but remain 18% higher than the same month last year.

However, meat, poultry and fish rose 0.5% in November and are 1.1% higher than a year ago.

Other groceries, restaurant meals and non-alcoholic beverages all rose during the month.

Food prices overall are 4.8% higher than the same time a year ago.
