Ministry considering High Court decision

6:30 am on 19 December 2010

The Ministry of Health says it is considering a High Court decision to dismiss an appeal against an earlier ruling that it had discriminated against families who provide care for disabled relatives.

Seven familes who want to receive the same payment for looking after their disabled adult children as other caregivers, brought the case.

The ministry had argued it was not possible to fund the employment of family members.

Chief Human Rights Commissioner Rosslyn Noonan says the ministry has put the families through a torrid and lengthy legal battle.

She is calling on the ministry to uphold the latest decision and provide immediate justice for the families.
