Database of births needed, says group

A group lobbying for changes to the maternity system says implementing a national database of births could help identify trends in preventable deaths.

The Government has released its response to recommendations from Parliament's health select committee on the topic, saying progress is being made.

The Good Fight Group, whose 2009 petition prompted the health select committee review, wanted numerous changes.

Spokesperson Jenn Hooper told Summer Report the lack of a national independent database is the biggest disappointment in the Government's response.

She says a database would help show which deaths of newsborns are preventable.

However, the Government says it is improving its current maternal database of newborn information which will be functional from July.
