Police in the Hutt Valley say an officer was repeatedly punched in the head, and another head butted during an arrest in the early hours of Saturday morning.

The officers were attending a disorder incident in Railway Avenue in Upper Hutt. Police say a male officer was punched 10 to 12 times in the head, and a woman officer head-butted, while they were trying to arrest a man.

The male officer was taken to hospital with lumps and bruises on his head, and concussion. He is now recovering at home.

A 25-year-old man appeared in the Upper Hutt District Court on Saturday morning on charges of aggravated assault, assault with intent to injure, obstructing police and resisting arrest.

A further 10 disorder arrests were made at the incident.
