Man convicted of daughter's murder granted last appeal

5:49 pm on 8 February 2011

A man jailed for at least 17 years for the murder of his 11-week-old daughter has been granted a final opportunity to overturn his convictions.

The Supreme Court in Wellington on Tuesday granted Azees Mahomed's application to appeal against his convictions.

The appeal will consider the admissibility of some evidence presented at Mahomed's trial and comments the judge made about that evidence.

As well as being found guilty of murdering his daughter Tahani, Mahomed was also found guilty of causing her grievous bodily harm and failing to provide the necessaries of life.

His wife was also found guilty of failing to provide the necessaries of life and jailed for four years.

No date has yet been set for Mahomed's appeal.
